‘The GOAT’ trends as Cristiano Ronaldo shines on debut, while Paul Pogba continues excellent start to season with two assists in Manchester United party at Old Trafford

Cristiano Ronaldo will undoubtedly take the headlines from anyone in world football with two goals on his Manchester United return, but his teammate Paul Pogba was once again in fine form.

Pogba’s current contract at Old Trafford will expire next summer, with the likes of PSG, Real Madrid and former club Juventus all keen on securing his signature.

Ronaldo and Pogba struck a brilliant partnership – will it be enough to convince the Frenchman to sign a new contract at Man United?

The French World Cup winner has provided plenty of debate since his return to England in 2016, but this season he’s silenced the critics.

The 28-year-old midfielder picked up another two assists today against Newcastle, taking his total to seven in United’s opening four league matches of the new campaign.

That’s the most any player has recorded in the first four games of a Premier League season in the competition’s history, while he now has provided 10 goals in 2021, more than anyone in the division.

Pogba secured his first assist of the day, finding Bruno Fernandes in space for a long-range strike that made it 3-1 to the hosts.

He then improved on his first effort, skilfully keeping possession around the Newcastle box before flicking the ball through to Jesse Lingard whilst on the turn, with the England international curling home.

The Frenchman managed 125 touches during the match, the most of anyone on the pitch, along with a 92% pass accuracy and 23 passes into the final third.

Previously, Pogba had recorded FOUR assists in his side’s 5-1 opening day win over Leeds, and he’s yet to let off.

The midfielder managed 75 minutes in Matchday 1’s comfortable victory, and has since played every minute of action for both United and France, continually increasing in importance for both teams.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was asked about links to big spenders PSG as the summer transfer window wound down last month.

“Well, that’s negotiations with Paul’s representatives and the club,” Solskjaer said.

“For me and Paul we work together every day here and we keep on trying to improve, improve the team and to enjoy ourselves.”

If United fail to agree a contract extension with Pogba in the coming months, they may need to force a sale during the January transfer window, or risk losing him for free next summer.

But, surely, the presence of Ronaldo and the prospect of continuing their new partnership could be enough to get him to commit.
