Stellenbosch University approves use of Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa – SABC News

The Council of Stellenbosch University has approved the proposed new language policy for the institution with an overwhelming majority. The policy provides for the use of Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa in learning and teaching at the university, as well as in communication.

The university’s spokesperson on language, Dr Leslie van Rooi, says the new policy will be implemented from January next year.

“Through this policy, the university recommits itself to multilingualism by using the three official languages of the Western Cape, namely Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa. Further the university, through its policy would like to enhance access and success as well as the idea of social cohesion even further on our campuses. The policy provides for the use of Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa in learning and teaching at Stellenbosch as well as in our communication,” says Van Rooi.
